The music video was directed by Los Angeles-based director Grant Vocalist and released on March viii, 2018.[iv] The duet version of the vocal, featuring vocaliser Kane Brown, was released on Apr 27, 2018.[5] [6]

The song was written past Cabello, Noonie Bao, Sasha Sloan, and its producer Frank Dukes, and co-producers Jarami. "Never Be the Same" received positive reviews from music critics, who praised its drum claw.[7]

Background [edit]

Cabello start performed the song during the B96 Summer Bash '17 on June 24, 2017.[eight] It was later included on the set list of her opening act for Bruno Mars' 24K Magic Earth Tour, firstly titled "I'll Never Be the Aforementioned" back then.[9] Cabello wrote the lyrics of the song, inspired by a relationship she had a couple years back.[9] The album includes 2 versions of the song. The original contains the line, "Nicotine, heroin, morphine" which is substituted in the radio edit version: "Nicotine, rushing me, touching me".[10] On the week of the album release, Billboard reported that, Cabello revealed in a recent interview that she wants to rework 1 of her songs into a state song with a country vocaliser.[11] [12] Says Joey Arbagey, executive VP of A&R of Epic Records, Sam Hunt was being considered and so, only Cabello later on chose Kane Brown and it worked out perfectly.[xiii]

This song has received plenty of praises from many country and popular/rock singers since information technology was out, including Dark-brown, Keith Urban, Kelsea Ballerini, James Barker from James Barker Band, Demi Lovato, Ellie Rowsell from Wolf Alice and more than.[17] Urban and Ballerini also covered the song on Urban's Graffiti U Globe Bout.[xviii] Cabello tweeted about her excitement for the cover song forth with a clip of the functioning.[14]

Composition and lyrics [edit]

"Never Be the Same" has been described every bit a power pop,[19] electro[xx] [21] and nighttime pop ballad.[22] The upbeat track features Cabello singing falsetto in the pre-chorus.[23] According to sheet music published past Sony/ATV Music Publishing on Musicnotes.com, "Never Be the Aforementioned" is composed in the central of C Major and set in common time at a slow tempo of 65 beats per infinitesimal. Cabello's voice ranges from a low of D3 to a high of G5, and the music has a C-G-Dm-F chord progression.[24]

The vocal features booming drums and echoed effects,[25] mimicking Hal Blaine's opening drum phrase from The Ronettes' 1963 vocal "Be My Infant."[7] The song's lyrics comprise themes of a pain-is-pleasure type of love.[2] They were described by Neil McCormick of The Daily Telegraph equally "a melodrama about addictive love".[10]

Critical reception [edit]

Newsday 'southward Glenn Gamboa wrote in his album review, "Cabello is at her height on ["Never Be the Same"] which shows off what sets her autonomously from the popular pack. [...] That she tin can quickly switch to her full voice for the desperate chorus is the mark of a star."[26] In Rolling Stone, Rob Sheffield considered that Cabello "really hits her stride in "Never Be the Aforementioned," which sounds like Brian Eno's alien-prog masterwork Some other Greenish Earth souped up into sputtering glitz-pop [...] It'south [Cabello] at her best – fifty-fifty at her most tormented, she sounds totally confident and totally herself."[27] In an unfavorable review, Patrick Ryan of Usa Today felt the song was "overproduced" with "often indecipherable lyrics".[28]

Rolling Rock listed it 4th of "fifty Best Songs of 2018", "Afterwards the ho-hum-burning piano grind of 'Havana', Camila switches gears for a gigantic electro carol that proves this daughter can handle any kind of song. In 'Never Exist The Aforementioned', she's an infatuation junkie who can't stop going back to the incorrect lover, because she but can't become enough. For the big climax, Camila gasps for jiff over the archetype 'Exist My Baby' drum hook – somewhere, Ronnie Spector must exist proud."[7]
